Smarter Travel Sutton to encourage 20,000 more residents to get cycling

Smarter Travel Sutton is launching a new campaign which aims to encourage 20,000 residents to take up cycling this spring.

The ‘Spring into Action’ campaign will involve the door-to-door distribution of leaflets with a set of promotional vouchers for over £100 worth of cycling-based services and products.   

The campaign will target residents in Wallington and Hackbridge as part of a focus on transport and sustainability initiatives in the area.  Both areas also accommodate a main route of the National Cycle Network and strategic routes to employment centres such as Sutton and Croydon. 

Sutton Council Travel Advisors will hand deliver the leaflets which feature a set of six tear-off vouchers which can be exchanged for free cycle training, a free smart water kit, half price bicycle service and discounts of cycle accessories and bicycles from three local bike stores.  

Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment on Sutton Council said: “Cycling is a hobby which I encourage everyone to take up; it helps the environment, get people fit and reduces congestion around the borough.  “This is a great initiative which will offer residents plenty of incentives to get on their bike, particularly since Wallington and Hackbridge are blessed with stacks of good cycle lanes which people can really make good use of.” 

‘Spring into Action’ will be officially launched on Saturday 6 March from 11am – 3pm outside the Old Town Hall in Wallington. The event will include a roadshow with Travel Advisors who will distribute vouchers, cycle maps and guides. There will also be a free ‘Dr Bike’ bike repair and advice service. 

Residents who do not live in Hackbridge or Wallington will have the opportunity to request a leaflet by e-mailing advice@smartertravelsutton.org.
